Lesson Review LO3
What I have done today is start and nearly finish the shot log which I will be completing in my free period
What I have done today is assess the footage clips for what we recorded on Wednesday which I need to complete in my free period
Rushes - Footage 3rd December LO3
What was good about this clip is the swings are going on their own which looks effective and we can use in our film
What is bad about this clip is the quality of the footage
We won't be using this clip but will re-film it
What was good about this clip is the camera is focused really well on the prop and the foot of the character and you can hear the sounds of the footsteps and the axe being dragged
What was bad about this clip is that the axe went on it's side when it was being dragged
We will be using this clip
What was good about this clip is that the scene looks realistic and the camera is focused well on every object in the room
What was bad about this clip is that we were blocking where the character could run so he couldn't run properly as he needed to slow down before running into us
We won't be using this clip and we will re-film this scene and move out of the way where he is running so he can properly run and it looks realistic
What is good about this clip is that the camera was sturdy whilst walking down the stairs and the lighting was correct of the room where the character was walking to
What is bad about this clip is that there is a shadow on the back of the main character and the room in the basement the light is on when it's meant to be off
We won't be using this clip as there is a shadow of the camera on the back of the main character and as he walks into the basement room it is the correct lighting but to the room of the right where the clown comes out the light is meant to be off
What is good about this clip is that the camera was sterdy whilst walking down the stairs
What is bad about this clip is that the camera was shaking on two steps as we were walking down the stairs when the rest of walking down the stairs was good so it didn't look professional and as the character walked towards the room it was light when it should have been dark
We won't be using this clip but we re-filmed this scene and we're going to use that one
What is good about this clip is that we managed to keep up with the actor whilst he was walking and the lighting is high key and we can see the shadow of the actor
What is bad about the clip is the lighting which is a bit too bright which could be more effective if it was low key
What was good about this clip was the lighting towards the door which is good and looks effective
What was bad about this clip was that the lighting changes as he's walking and we couldn't keep up with the actor as he was walking
We won't be using this clip
What was good about this clip is at the beginning where it looks like were in a really old house with a rug and wooden flooring and the way the light is beaming on the floor from the window
What was bad about this clip is that it was very shaky and we couldn't really put it anywhere in the film trailer
We won't be using this clip
What was good about this clip is that is establishes the location and focuses on the house where some of the other scenes will be filmed
What was bad about this clip is that is doesn't focuses straight away on the house it goes out of focus and then back into focus on the house so we will cut that bit out so it just shows it focused on the house.
Lesson Objective
In today's lesson I will be uploading the footage which we filmed on Wednesday and I will be filling out the shot log for the new footage

Kill list (2011) - Directed by WHEATLEY Ben Available at: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aqkqF--v1tg (Accessed 08/9/14)
This audio visual product is a film trailer with the purpose
to entertain the audience. Audio visual products are encoded to create a preferred
reading to the audience (Stuart Hall 1980). The preferred reading of Kill List
is a crime/horror/thriller which is about two hit men who have been assigned to
assassinate different targets but things look like they don’t go as smoothly as
they would have liked as there are religious groups involved with dangerous weapons.
Content/meaning - The film follows two stages of (Tzvetan Todorov 1977) theory with the first stage being shown when the main character is with his son which is a calm scene and we see towards the beginning he is laughing and having a drink with his wife and his partner and his wife. The second stage occurs when we see the main character starting to get angry with him pulling the table cloth off, guns being drawn and we see that the main character is also being followed.
Location- One location that is denoted in the film is in the woods, we can see that it is in the woods because there are lots of trees, no light and no road. This scene in the woods was filmed at night with a stereotype that something bad is going to happen where nobody will be able to hear you shout / scream because you’re far from civilization where even bodies can easily be hidden. Another location that is shown in the trailer is in a hotel which we as the audience can clearly see as there are a number of different rooms and it looks well established. This location is significant because all the characters involved in this scene are well dressed in suits and large amounts of money are being exchanged which is like a typical business meeting. The film trailer starts the action scene at a cul-de-sac which we can tell because there aren’t any shops from what we can see but just a number of other houses. The action starts with the main character kicking someone’s door down while the other is carrying a prop which is a gym bag. The gym bag has a gender stereotype because you don't usually see women carrying round a large gym bag which looks heavy it is seen as more of a man's job where they can look big and scary where no one will try and rob the money but a women is seen as more defenseless John Berger (1972)
Costume – The clothes denoted in this film trailer are casual and smart casual. When the main character is at home with his wife and son he will dress smartly in nice jeans and a smart top but when he is doing his job he will wear an old top, old jeans and a big coat. When there is money being exchanged he and his partner are both wearing what looks like expensive suits which signifies that they are both well paid and what also suggests this is that it appears his wife and son are both well taken care of with them living in a nice house. There is a cult in the film trailer who all have the same costume layout which is an old dress with a bag on their head holding a flaming torch which connotes fear into the characters that they’re after because they run towards someone or something and you can’t see their faces.
Props- There is two main props in Kill List which is a pistol and an automatic assault rifle which guns are a stereotype to kill people. Another prop denoted in the film is a flaming torch. Fire connotes danger which is very biblical to destroy or to get rid of something or someone. One of the other props which is used is a gym bag which is stereotypical to carry money to do some sort of exchange or guns which is used to kill someone.
Gestures – The body gestures of the two main characters connotes that they act hard and walk round like they shouldn’t be messed with. The main character is shown to have two sides to him, one when he’s on the job where he is being serious and you can see in his face expression that he is determined to get the job done and isn’t joking around. The other side to him is when he’s at home with his wife and son, when he’s at home he is seen as a loving dad who loves them both and will do anything to protect them but completely different when he leaves.
Lighting/colors – The lighting in this trailer plays a key part in itself by showing you the audience how the story is going to progress. The trailer connotes this to the audience by showing at the beginning everything is nice and the sun is shining. The sky then goes from sunny to grey when a gym bag is carried and large amounts of money are exchanged, when guns are being shown it goes pitch black connoting things are going from good too bad for the character. As the audience we can tell that things go bad towards the end with guns being fired and the trailer has shown it at night time which uses the color black which denotes mystery, fear, anger and death.
Camera shots – At the beginning of the film trailer there is a close up shot which is used to show the audience the main character and his son. Another shot type that is used is an establishing shot which suggests to the audience that this is where one of the scenes will be shot which it is and is towards the end of the film trailer. One of the other shot types used is a medium close up where we can see the seriousness of the main characters face expression and also his body movement which he slouches to each side every time he walks.
Camera Angles – In one of the scenes from the film trailer there is a low angle shot where the characters are walking away from the car towards the side of where the camera is which connotes there power and dominance John Berger (1972). There is also a tracking shot used in the hotel scene where as if the camera is walking backwards and the characters are walking forwards instead of using a still camera and have the characters walk to it. The sound in the film trailer goes from quiet at the start to then progressively get faster and louder when something is about to happen.
Editing - In the trailer at 0:24 there is a fade to black which is an ellipsis which connotes passage of time. At 0:40 there is slow motion where the main character is play fighting with his son with a sword and what is significant about this is that it's what the main character does when he leaves home he kills people for a living. There are also title graphics within the film trailer like "THE SCARIEST HIT MAN MOVIE I HAVE EVER SEEN" which adds credibility to the film by getting ratings from big companies and newspapers.
Sound - The sound is non diegetic throughout the trailer with mysteries music being played connoting that something is going to happen when it gets faster and louder. There are also diegetic sounds in the film when a spoon is being banged on a saucer which we see at exactly 1:04 which gets faster and louder which builds anticipation connoting that something is going to happen.
Intended Audience - The intended audience for kill list will be for young adults to middle-aged adults as the film is an 18+. The majority of the audience will be males as it is a crime and horror with a lot of guns being used and people being killed which a lot of females won't be into and the film trailer doesn't show many females. The audience will be targeted at people with ABC1 disposable incomes.

Dead Man's Shoes (2004) - MEADOWS Shane
Available at: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fFi6FrAV9SE
(Accessed 09/9/14)
This audio visual product is a film trailer with the purpose
of entertaining the audience. The preferred reading (Stuart Hall 1980) of Dead
Man’s Shoes is a drama/crime/thriller. The film trailer fulfills the purpose and
fits into the genre by creating a believable story about the character and a
convincing background to explain the actions of the main characters.
Content/meaning - The structure of the film fulfils three stages of(Tzvetan Todorov 1977) theory with the first stage being showed where the character is on a walk with his brother which is calm. The second stage is an enigma where his brother is being tortured by a group of characters which angers the main character. The third stage being followed with a resolution which we don't see all of this but we see the character try and do stage three by killing the people who tortured his brother.
Location- The location of where the action is taking place is in a village somewhere near the countryside and what suggests this to us is that we see the main character and his brother on what looks to be like a long journey through the countryside to get to the village. We can see that it is the countryside because of the trees, grass and flours and there is no road or anyone but the characters walking. One of the scenes where the main character is in a block of flats and we can see this as the audience because of all the brick work and number of different rooms that the character runs past. The gender in Dead Man’s Shoes is very stereotypical because there are no females in the trailer, we don’t even see any females in the background.
Costume – The clothes of the main character remain the same nearly all the way through the film trailer; the clothes denoted in the film are casual in the sense of him wearing jeans and a big coat apart from one scene where he changes into a long black sleeve top. The main character at one point wears a gas mask which gives the audience an impression that he is trying to scare one of the other characters.
Props- There are a number of props denoted in Dead Man’s Shoes like an axe which we see the main character using on the farm that he is staying at which is almost like a warning to the characters who see him using it. Another prop which we see In the movie trailer is a pistol and a rifle which have significant purpose in the film because it is all about revenge and it is weapons like this which we would associate with killing people. It shows us in one of the scenes in the movie trailer the pistol being pointed at one of the main characters with a bag on his head which we picture that he pulls the trigger and kills him. The other characters in the film trailer have weapons also like a rifle and metal pole which in a sense isn’t really to murder the main character but is being used in more of self-defense way because the main character is trying to kill them all for torturing his brother.
Gestures – The gestures denoted in the film is a lot of the characters face expressions especially the main character where we can see the hut and pain because of what they did to his brother but then anger as well because he won’t stop till he gets revenge and ensures they won’t torture his brother again. We can see the face expressions on the other character where as an audience we can see that they’re scared because they have a character who they know nothing about who is going to stop at nothing. One of the characters even starts crying which we can see there is sadness and regret, one of the characters even tries to run away from the main character who is wearing a gas mask which connotes the fear he has struck into him and that they’re scared or him.
Lighting and color- The lighting denotes what is happening in the film trailer and gives us a clear indication of the mood which is being set. The natural light is used in a lot of the scenes but there is no sun but just a grey sky which connotes the mood as being gloomy and sadness. A lot of when the violence is occurring is done at night time where it’s pitch black which we associate as the audience the color black with fear, anger and death. The color red is used as an effect that flashes when the main character is scaring another character in his gas mask and there is also writing on one of the walls which has been wrote in blood which is red. We associate the color red with a lot of emotions like anger, danger, death, and revenge which is exactly what the main character would be feeling if we imagined everything that he had been through.
Camera shots – At the start of the trailer we see an establishing shot which shows us the journey that the brothers are going on. In one of the scenes there is an over the shoulder shot when there is a conversation between the leader of the other characters and one of his followers. There is a close up shot between the main character and the leader of who he’s after which allows us to see close up their face expression and we as the audience can almost see what they’re feeling. One is angry, wanting to kill the other and the other is scared because he doesn’t know who he is or what he is capable of.
Camera angles – There is a low camera angle when the main character is waiting in the room with a gas mask and a hammer, looking down on one of the other characters asleep on the sofa and another on the chair. This shoes the power and dominance of the character which shows star persona (Dyer 1975) which also gives us the impression something bad is going to happen. There is also a panning shot where all the other characters are sat round a table the camera moves from left to right to show all the characters sat which shows the environment that they’re in which is relaxed because they’re smoking away and drinking. The music makes it very tense in some scenes when a character is threatening another you can tell from the music the level of tension and the hate between the two. You can tell how the music changes when something is about to happen which builds suspense for the audience putting them on the edge of their seat.
Editing - There are a lot of fade to red effects denoted in the film which is an ellipsis which connotes passage of time where we see one of the characters happy and having a good time with his friends but then running away the next as he's scared. The colour red connotes danger and death which is why there is a fade to red as people are being killed and there is danger. There are also title graphics in the film trailer some which connote some of the story like "a brothers vengeance" which is also red which connotes danger especially the words vengeance which are shown in capitals and a different font to stand out. The other title graphics in the film are reviews which give credibility to the film as it has been rated by big companies and newspapers.
Sound - The sound is Dead Man's Shoes is non diegetic with peaceful music being played at the beginning when the character is traveling but then it gets progressively louder and faster as it builds anticipation connoting that it's leading up to something happening. There is also diegetic sounds in the trailer when we see his brother being tortured and he's screaming which adds effect making us as the audience feel what his brother is feeling which is anger as they are torturing his brother.
Intended audience - The intended audience for Dead Mans Shoes is for young adults to middle-aged males as the film is for 18s+. The audience will be majority of males as it has a lot of weapons with a lot of people being killed with no females being shown in the film trailer. The audience will be targeted at people with ABC1 disposable incomes.

London Boulevard (2010) - MONAHAN William
Available at: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Jil22M_EISU
(Accessed 10/9/14)
The audio visual product is a film trailer with a purpose to
entertain the audience. The preferred reading (Stuart Hall 1980) of London
Boulevard has a crime/drama genre. The film trailer fulfils the purpose and is
suited to the set genre by showing us a character who is an ex con with a
secret past which slowly creeps up to him.
The drama begins to happen when the boss who is a gangster rings up
saying that he owes him money and send gangster after him but he is trying to
get back on the straight and narrow where he has a job of looking after an
actress, when they begin to fall in love.
Location – One of the locations which is denoted in the film trailer is at the top of some stairs which connotes it is at the actresses house or where she is as we see the main character fighting two of the paparazzi with it ending with them two getting beaten up and thrown down the stairs. Another location denoted is in a hotel when the main character and the boss are sat talking, we know this because there are people in the background and the room is well established and has a hotel layout which we can recognize. In this scene the boss is trying to tell the main character he is a gangster but then the main character begins to threaten the boss saying that he would kill him if he was. We see another main location where the boss has a pistol, two of his body guards, the main character and another character. The boss fires many rounds of the pistol at something which we don’t see but presume it is a person that has just been assassinated. At first sight seeing the location it looks like an underground unit under a building but then later on we see the same location and it makes it clear to us as the audience where it is. The location looks to be in a very tall, not built building and what suggests this is there are lifts behind the character and there is no wall around the sides of the building where we can see across to another tall building which looks like a tall block of flats.
Costumes - The clothes denoted in the film of the main character remain nearly the same throughout which is what looks to be an expensive suit. The main character wearing an expensive suit suggests to us that as the audience that he is / was well paid. He changes into a tracksuit when he goes to see someone in a car and this is done at night which suggests to us that he is trying to be discreet and keep his head down so that nobody can see him and it will just look like he’s going for a jog. It also suggests he might be hurting/killing someone because he approaches someone in a hat with low key lighting from behind suggesting he isn’t going there to talk otherwise he could have met him in his suit and during the day and not approach him from behind. Most of the other characters also wear suits which suggest that they are important or well-paid whether it be to look well-presented or do business.
Props – The main prop which appears the most in the film trailer are pistols which we see are used for one purpose which is used to kill people. We know this as the audience because we actually see it being fired by the boss and we can tell by the face expression on the other characters faces that it may have been on a person. Another prop that is used is a knife which we clearly see towards the beginning of the trailer and we also see the boss threatening one of the characters with it. One of the other main props is a camera which is used quite often by the paparazzi. The paparazzi using the cameras as a prop fits in with the story because essentially the main character is supposed to be protecting the big famous actress from all he paparazzi which keep intruding on her privacy and we actually see the main character fight with two of the paparazzi.
Gestures- As the audience we can see that when the boss is firing the pistol at someone or something we can see the sheer shock on the face of the main character and his hands are saying please not me and his body movement is acting like he’s scared because he moves back and sort of turns to the side. We see at the end of the trailer a scene where he main character is talking to the boss and we can see the face expression on the main character which is sheer anger and we can tell that by how his voice changes as well as his face which connotes to us he wants to kill the boss as he is beyond scared.
Lighting – The lighting in the trailer becomes light at the start of the trailer when the main character is offered to look after the actress which suggests this is a new beginning for him as we see he is an ex con. The lighting then gets progressively darker as it goes on revealing more of the main characters past and all the dark secrets that he has. The lighting denotes from being light when the main characters receives his new job offer but then to dark when the boss is introduced then back to light when he is with the actress. It seems to continually do this throughout the film trailer suggesting to us as the audience that it’s like he has almost two completely different lives which he is living. One where he is trying to get his life back on track and we can see he is starting to fall in love with the actress and that he will do anything to protect her but the other life is trying to pull him back down to be a gangster.
Shot types- At the start of the film trailer we see a crowd shot which is showing the atmosphere of everyone congratulating the main character and everyone shown as being happy and pleased for him. Just after the beginning of the trailer there is an extreme close up which connotes using a knife which is being used as either a tool or to threaten/ kill someone. There are a lot of over the shoulder shots in the this film trailer which connotes a point of view from the different characters like when everyone is congratulating him there is a conversation between the main character and another character, another example of this is when the main character is talking with the actress.
There are a lot of tracking shots where the camera is physically moving with the character like in the first scene when the character is walking towards the camera and the camera is walking back which connotes that the character is important is it focuses on him and not the rest of the crowd. When the camera moves towards the boss just after shoots something or someone which connotes the importance of the boss and the main characters gestures.
Editing - There are a variety of title graphics denoted in the film trailer like "The girl" and "Ex-con" which connotes information about the characters and introduces us to them so we know who the different characters are. The title graphics are in red which can connote many different things like danger and death which we would associate with the film because there are a lot of weapons used. At 0:22 there is a fade to black which is an ellipsis which connotes passage of time.
Sound - The sound in the film trailer is Non diegetic throughout the film trailer with it the music starting of quite calm but getting more up beat as the story is beginning to unfold and more characters are introduced and things start happening. There is diegetic sounds used like at the start when the crowd is shouting which we as the audience see and guns shots which we also see.
Intended audience - The intended audience for London Boulevard will be for mostly young adults and older because the story line is something that will be more appealing for adults with the gender being a mixed as females will enjoy the romance and the girl being protected in the film but the males will enjoy that there are weapons and the characters have a background of being ex-cons and gangsters. The audience will be targeted at people with ABC1 disposable incomes.
Content/meaning - The film structure follows three stages of (Tzvetan Todorov 1977) theory with the beginning being calm with the main character starting a new life which isn't illegal and about killing people. The second stage is where an enigma occurs where the past of the main character comes back to haunt him and people are sent after him which we see men in suits which we associate that they're trying to kill him. We see stage three when the main character is trying to resolve the issue by sending the people he loves away while he goes back to deal with the problems that keep coming back to haunt him which is the boss and his men.
Location – One of the locations which is denoted in the film trailer is at the top of some stairs which connotes it is at the actresses house or where she is as we see the main character fighting two of the paparazzi with it ending with them two getting beaten up and thrown down the stairs. The audio visual product is a film trailer with a purpose of
entertaining the audience. The preferred reading (Stuart Hall 1980) of 71 has
an action/drama genre. The film trailer fulfills the purpose and is suited to
the genre by displaying a soldier who is accidentally been left by his squad rant
after a crowd turned violent against the group of soldiers by throwing objects
and trying to injure them. We see him at the beginning as sort of a father or
brother figure to a little boy who he has to leave as they are sent to Belfast
on an emergency basis.
Content/meaning - The narrative structure of the film trailer follows three stages of (Tzvetan Todorov 1997) theory with the first stage showing the main character training and playing with a little boy which is peaceful and we see that everything is fine. The second stage is where the enigma occurs when the main character is left behind in Belfast where people are trying to kill him as he is a soldier. The third stage is where we see the main character fighting back and trying to survive and get out of Belfast alive and we acknowledge that his troops realise that he has been left behind.
Location – The location denoted is in a village in a street with lots of houses surrounding,
the action is set around the street with the main character running in, out and
around the houses trying to survive. One of the other locations where the
action occurs is in what looks to be a block of flats where a man with a pistol
is approaching the main character that is hiding round the corner unarmed. What
suggests this is that across from the building is what looks to be a tall block
of flats with lots of lights and windows spread out which has the layout of
some flats.
Costume - The clothes of the main character remain the same throughout the trailer which are his army uniform which is green with a blue beret. The clothes of the rest of the characters are old fashioned which connotes that it was set many years ago with a lot of the clothes are quite dull colors, none of them are bright vibrant colors with the women in old fashioned dresses and men in jumpers with trousers and shoes. The other characters who appear to chase the main character are wearing big coats which are the color black which we associate with death and danger.
Props- There are two main props denoted in 71 which both have one purpose which we can see as an audience which is to kill. The army troops are the ones carrying big rifles which only get fired once throughout the trailer which is shot as a warning shot as we see the crowd are getting out of hand and the soldiers can’t control them. The other main prop is a pistol which is used quite regularly which is used to shoot at the main character a lot of the time but the main character manages to get his hands on one whilst trying to hide and survive. We see one of the other characters with a gun which is pointed at the back of someone’s head as they are on their knees which there hands behind their head which connotes to us as the audience that he is about to be killed.
Gesture – The gestures denoted in the film trailer is a lot of running during the film trailer for two different reasons, one of the reasons is that the main character is running because he’s scared and trying to survive by running away from the enemies who are running to chase him because they’re angry at the fact he troops are trying to tell them what to do ad order them around. We see the main character holding his stomach quite a lot in the trailer which suggests he has been badly injured which connotes he has been badly injured which as the audience we see he has less of a chance for his survival because he won’t be able to move as fast and fast like he would have been able to.
Lighting – The lighting denoted in 71 progressively changes with us the audience being aware that it’s changing and why it’s changing. We can see that at the beginning when he isn't being deployed and he’s playing football with the little boy that its light connoting that everything is fine and there is nothing to worry about. As soon as the riot starts from the crowd in Belfast the lighting becomes progressively darker with it eventually being set at night where the sky is black which we see it connotes danger and death as the main character is trying to survive whilst trying to be killed at the same time.
Camera shot – At the very beginning of the trailer we see an establishing shot which sets the first scene. We see in this shot the troops training in some sort of remote and deserted location which connotes they’re being prepared to be sent away. Towards the middle of the trailer when the is soldier is hiding and a little boy with a mask approaches him there is an over the shoulder shot which shows us a point of view and almost makes us think what would we do if we saw him. We later see a close up of the soldiers face when he is looking out of the window. As the audience we can see that he’s scared and doesn't know whether he’s going to make it, we can also see on his face many cuts which connotes he’s in pain and has been injured. In the film trailer there are many tracking shots used, they are used a lot when the main character is being chased by the enemies. The tracking shot involves us as the audience making us realize that if he is caught that he won’t survive and all it takes is maybe one of those bullets to kill him.
Editing - There are title graphics which appear throughout the film which are reviews which companies and newspapers have rated the film and summed it up in a few works which adds credibility to the film. At 1:17 there is a montage connoting the main character trying to survive we can see it is a montage because there is lots of different shots with all different locations and characters with the music getting faster and louder which is an ellipsis which connotes passage of time.
Sound - The sound used in 71 is mostly non diegetic with the music getting faster and louder progressively as anticipation is being build when he arrives at Belfast. There are many diegetic sounds used especially at 0:21 when the bin lids are being banged against the floor by other characters who live there getting faster and louder on top of the non diegetic sound in the background. There is also another non diegetic sound at 0:28 which is a gun shot which we connote with something is about to happen.
Intended audience - The intended audience of 71 will be mostly older teenagers and adults with it being mostly viewed by males as it is all about action without romance or anything else it is mostly about survival which will be more appealing for males than females which aren't shown much in the film trailer. The target audience will be for audiences with a ABC1 disposable income.

This
audio visual product is a film trailer with the purpose to entertain the
audience. Audio visual products are encoded to create a preferred reading to
the audience (Stuart Hall 1980). The preferred reading of Submarine is a comedy
/ drama / romance and the film
trailer fulfills the purpose and fits into the genre by showing us a character
named Oliver Tate who falls in love with a girl name Jordana we learn that the
young couple fall out leaving Oliver heartbroken and deeply sorry for his
actions, another part to the plot line is Oliver mission to rekindle his
parents love when he discovers they have become distant from each other.
Content/meaning - The film structure follows two stages of (Tzvetan Todorov 1977) thoery where we see at the beginning stage two with the main character facing many enigmas with one of them being "he doesn't quite know who he is" and another we see is his parents not having intimacy. The story then goes to stage one where we see it being calm where he falls for Jordana but then we see it go back to an engima and end on one when they fall out and we don't see if they get back together.
Location - One location that is denoted in the film is on the beach under the pier. This location connotes to us as the audience that the characters want privacy as we see it is the second time Oliver meets Jordana where they kiss for the first time in the trailer. One of the other locations denoted is in the house of Oliver where we see him wearing a blue hat and laying on the floor looking at the ceiling which we can associate with being yourself at home and not worrying what people think of you but would be seen as different and strange if he did it anywhere else.
Costume - The costume that is denoted reflects who Oliver is as a person. He wears formal clothes all of the time which connotes he is a upper class person who is always dressed smart and likes to impress. Jordana also dresses in formal clothes like Oliver but she wears bright clothes which reflect that she is less socially awkward than Oliver. Oliver wears quite plain and ordinary clothes unlike Jordana which connotes that he doesn't like to be noticed and he keeps himself to himself instead of talking to different people and making friends. As the audience we can see the 'male gaze' (Laura Mulvey 1975) theory which is challenged by Jordana as the male gaze connotes 'men do the looking and women are there to be looked at'. Jordana challenges this by not dressing in revealing clothes like most girls who are there just to be looked at. Even when Jordana is at Oliver's house having a meal and chooses to wear a jumper and she continues to wear non revealing clothes throughout the trailer.Content/meaning - The film structure follows two stages of (Tzvetan Todorov 1977) thoery where we see at the beginning stage two with the main character facing many enigmas with one of them being "he doesn't quite know who he is" and another we see is his parents not having intimacy. Props - One prop that is denoted in submarine is a briefcase. A briefcase is stereotyped to be for men who work so they can keep all there important documents safe and with them at all times. What we also associate with a briefcase is that they are used by a high class of people and we usually associate low class people with just having a backpack and we see Oliver as being a high class person in the way he acts. Another prop denoted is a dimmer switch which plays a key role by connoting the activity of his parents which is one of the problems we see him face which we can tell because why else would the character be monitoring this so closely.
Gesture - The gestures denoted in the film trailer connote that the two main characters are both unpopular and awkward. Oliver both talks correctly and makes sure his body posture it up right which is connoting that he is very well brought up and well looked after by his parents. Jordana is like Oliver in the sense she speaks and has the same correct body posture.
Lighting - The lighting that is denoted in the trailer is significant to us showing the different moods of the character with low and high key lighting. The lighting begins off by starting dark which connotes that there is a problem, which is exactly what the trailer does it shows us the problems Oliver has. We as the audience acknowledge he "doesn't quite know who he is" which is one of his problems but another is his parents not having intimacy. The lighting begins to start becoming light when Oliver meets Jordana which connotes it is something positive happening in his life and not another problem.
Camera Angle - At 0:05 towards the beginning of the trailer we see an establishing shot which is a key scene in the trailer. This scene connotes to us as the audience that it is somewhere Oliver and Jordana can go and be alone from everyone. At 0:49 when Oliver meets Jordana under the pier on the beach we see a medium close up shot of both of the characters. The medium close up of Oliver connotes he is scared and doesn't know what to do or what is going to happen which we can see from his face expression. At 0:50 we see a medium close up of Jordana which connotes the difference between the two characters with one wearing bright colours and the other not which we can see her dominance by her face expression and when she commands Oliver to "kneel down, close your eyes"
Editing - At 1:01 there is a horizontal wipe where it changes location from Jordana talking to Oliver from under the bridge to Oliver and Jordana walking along the street side by side. There are many title graphics throughout the trailer with one of them telling us a bit about of what is happening for instance when it says "establish relationships" what is different about this to the other text shown in the trailer is that it appears as if the main character is typing it on his typewriter which is significant and gives it a purpose. The rest of the title graphics which appear are reviews from different companies which give the film credibility.
Sound - The sound used in submarine is none diegetic with the background music being played gently while the trailer is introducing the story and characters. The music is quite mysterious and wired which matches the characters who are strange and different. There is a diegetic sound when Oliver is using the typewriter which we can hear as part of the sound. The music changes after half way through which changes to sort of being a sad song instead of a wired one which matches what the story is trying to tell us which is trying to make us feel sorry for him as we can see him and Jordana have fallen out.
Intended audience - The intended audience for submarine will mostly be aimed for teenage girls because it is more of a romance film which girls enjoy seeing more than males. The target audience will be for audiences with a ABC1 disposable income.

Jamie Lindell - Big Love (July 2nd 2012) Music Video, Directed by Michael Carter
There is a story to this music video and two sides to it with a boxer and a dancer which is showing them both working hard, for a competitions. The dancer shows to have fun instead of being serious like the boxer all the time. This music video is to entertain. I would like to pastiche putting a story with a meaning in my music video.

Battles - Atlas (Feb 28, 2007) Music Video, Directed by Timothy Saccenti
This music video doesn't show a story like the previous one but it shows the band playing and all the different instruments being played. It shows you how much work is required and that it's not as simple as just picking a guitar up or playing the drums it takes practise after practise. It is to entertain as well as they are in a glass box spinning around which gives you something other to look at instead of just the band playing and the instruments. I would like to pastiche showing instruments being played as they aren't just not important as the singer because its the instruments which make the music that is being played not just the lyrics.

Four Lions - Directed by Chris Morris (2010)
The story is about taking something so serious like terrorism and turning it into something funny.
What I would like to Pastiche is creating something funny whether it has been taken from a serious or non serious topic.
